Cocoi Heron7 viewsTaken in the Napo River basin in the Amazon jungle - Equador. I did see these guys daily while there. It was hard to get close to them. This guy was a cool dude, let me get within 50 feet to get this shot before flying away.

Forest Falcon - Bella Vista Lodge in the cloud forest of Equador6 viewsSeveral of the bird watchers were delighted to see this shot and wanted to know where I found him. I told them down the hill on trail #3 behind the lodge. Several of them grabbed their stuff and headed off to find him. I didn't have the heart to tell them that this guy showed up and landed on the tree right next to where I had coffee that morning.... (note to self, always bring the camera to breakfast).

The reason I was able to get this shot is that I paddled a kayak near a next of youngsters so dad was right nearby. The next was in a bad location for photos and I didn't want to disturb the family more than I already had so I took this shot of dad.

Green Parrot8 viewsTake in the Tikal ruins of Guatemala - Spring 2007
Pairs of these guys are flying all over the Tikal ruins squaking and making a bunch of noise. They're always high up in the trees and hard to get shots of. I happen to spot this guy up in the trees by himself quietly looking down.

Kea Bird - South Island of New Zealand8 viewsImagine driving along and seeing this guy over a ditch on the other side of the road in a gravel parking lot. Naturally I took the chance and drove over and quietly slinked out of the car. Imagine my surprise when not only had this Kea not flown away, about a dozen of his buddies started flying in. I was further surprised to find that I didn't need to try to get closer as they were all advancing toward me...... OK, now cut to your most disturbing memory of the Hitchcock classic "The Birds." As it turns out, Kea's are only found on the South Island of New Zealand and are notorious for mischief. Before I knew it, I was shooing them off my car as they were dismantling the wipers and trim. The jumped on my camera lens and me. I snapped a few out of focus shots but got this one shot of the ring leader....

Very pretty birds but because they are part of the turkey family, they're dumb as a bag of hammers.

Andean Potoo9 viewsTake in the cloud forest of Equador - Spring 2007
I'd love to share some amazing story about how I got this shot. But, the Poo Too hunts food during the evening and sleeps during the day. This ones favorite resting spot is up in the trees right outside the lodge. Go to the top floor and open the window and there he his.

Tiger Heron - Napo Region Amazon Jungle, Equador8 viewsTaken in the Napo River basin in the Amazon jungle - Equador 2007. I was in an inflatable kayak chasing an Aninga bird that had gone under the water. I was being very quiet (as usual) and paddling along the creek. I decided to stop and not move in the hope the bird would surface. Sitting there quietly looking out over the water, I heard a some noise on shore near where I had decided to hide. There stood this Tiger Heron watching me intently. I quietly took about 6 shots. The first 3 were used to get the focus and metering right. The remaining 3 are shown here. After taking these shots, he slowly moved farther away from shore and out of sight.
